Will joined the Creative Economy Programme at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport at the end of April 2008. Working in a team of four, Will and his colleagues are in the process of realizing the ambitions for the creative industries set out in Creative Britain. The CEP team leads and coordinates the activities of a range of partner organisations in the UK government and wider public sector that are delivering Creative Britain's 26 commitments. Prior to the Creative Economy Programme Will worked in the Cabinet Office and in the Gambling Division in DCMS. Will's previous associations with the creative sector include appearances as an extra in several UK soap operas whilst at University, many happy summers teaching drama and music to American children and a brief and surreal period at drama school.

Creative Britain, New Talents for the New Economy
In February 2008, the UK Government launched a strategy for Britain's Creative Industries - Creative Britain, New Talents for the New Economy. The strategy aims to move the creative industries from the margins to the mainstream of the UK economy. Talent, innovation, business growth and intellectual property - key drivers of success in the creative industries, are all supported by the strategy. Local, regional and international elements ensure that Creative Britain will help the UK's creative industries increase their impact domestically and globally. Creative Britain is led by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and jointly owned by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) and the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills. It enjoys wide support across the UK Government and public sector and is backed-up by over ?70m of Government funding. This presentation will explain how the strategy was formulated, a process that took some time and involved a high-level of industry engagement. It will outline the economic contribution of the Creative Industries to the UK economy, which forms part of the rationale for Government support for the sector. Looking in more detail at the strategy itself, the presentation will provide an overview of the 26 commitments, highlight some key areas of progress and look at the next steps for the strategy.
