Having graduated from the Pedagogical Faculty in České Budějovice as a teacher of arts and mathematics, he pursued that career until 1990, e.g. in Jihlava and Telč. After the Velvet Revolution he was elected mayor of Telč and held the post between 1990-1998 and later again in 2001-2002; under his mayorship Telč was in 1992 inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, along with Prague and Český Krumlov; Václav Jehlička took part in the founding of the Association of Historical Sites of Bohemia Moravia and Silesia in 1990, a non-governmental organization grouping together mostly historical municipalities or their parts on whose territory important cultural values, especially immovable property, have been preserved. The activities of the Association focus on all aspects of conservation, protection and permanent usability of our cultural heritage. In 1996 he was first elected to the Senate of the Czech Republic and subsequently re-elected in 1998 and 2004. In January 2007, Václav Jehlička was appointed Minister of Culture. He is member of the Christian and Democratic Union - Czechoslovak People's Party. |
