Jan Šedivý

Jan Sedivy received the MSc and PhD from the Czech Technical University, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Prague. Currently he is leading the Engineering Team focusing on regional technology in Google. He has worked on a range of projects from search quality to maps. Before joining Google he worked for 16 years in IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, in the department of Human Language Technologies, NY. He was a manager of Voice Technologies and Systems, IBM CZ, Prague. He has been the principal designer of the IBM Embedded ViaVoice speech recognition engine. He was leading numerous projects in the field of dialog interaction, user interfaces, mobile devices, Internet application. In the recent years he has been involved in many EU projects cooperating with universities. He holds more then 15 US patents.

The presentation will focus on one of the core values of Google: innovation, innovation on a global scale. Google's intention is to democratize access to the world's information by smart web search that reduces the amount of time you spend searching and gives you the best search results - be it a book, an image, news, an article or a web page. At the same time, it shouldn't matter whether you're at your work PC, use your desktop at home, or are on the go with your mobile. Innovation enables us to forget language barriers: we can search in over 100 languages, with tens of products in at least 40 languages. But being global also means having a truly local presence and being innovative in how we adjust our search to local needs. Innovation is for us a continuous cycle of product improvement, which is closely linked to the well-known 20% projects Google has in place for its engineers. Google believes in open web for everyone, which creates innovative environment. Innovation on the web comes from sharing ideas and opening up our technology so that other web developers can use it for their own projects. Innovation and hard work at Google are the essentials which help us to keep making it easier and more fun for all our users who are the main focus of our innovative ideas.
