David Throsby

David Throsby is Professor of Economics at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia. He has published widely in the economics of art and culture, as well as in the economics of the environment and the economics of education. His current research interests include the role of artists as economic agents, sustainability of cultural capital, theories of value, and the relationships between economic and cultural policy. His book Economics and Culture (Cambridge University Press, 2001) has been translated into five languages. Together with Victor Ginsburgh, he edited the Handbook of the Economics of Art and Culture Vol. 1 (Elsevier Science/North-Holland, 2006), and a second volume is in preparation. David Throsby's new book, The Economics of Cultural Policy, is due for publication by Cambridge in 2009.

The individual artist in the creative economy and creative ecologies 

Much attention has focused recently on the so-called creative economy, a component of the broader macro economy that is increasingly recognized as an important source of employment and economic growth, especially in contemporary Europe. The creative arts can be seen as the core of the creative economy, and individual artists are at the centre of the creative arts. This presentation will discuss the role of the creative arts sector in generating the creative ideas that sustain the cultural and creative industries and that contribute to innovation in the wider economic, social and cultural spheres. Particular attention will be paid to the interactive networks within which artists and arts organizations function that can be compared with ecological systems in the natural world. The implications of these developments for public policy towards the arts and the wider cultural industries will be discussed with reference to the changing face of cultural policy in the current global economic environment.
