Ján Figeľ graduated from the Technical University of Košice and after his university studies he worked in research and development until 1992. In 1998 he was elected to the National Council of the Slovak Republic as a candidate of the Christian Democratic Movement, whose member he has been since 1990. In the National Council he was member of the Foreign Committee, Defence and Security Committee and European Integration Committee. Between 1998 and 2002 he served as State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was also the main negotiator of the Slovak Republic appointed to negotiate Slovak accession into the European Union (1998-2003). In 2002 he was re-elected to the National Council of the Slovak Republic. In 2004 he became member of the European Commission and was in charge of business and information society in Romano Prodi's Commission and in the same year he became commissioner for education, culture and youth when José Manuel Barroso's became President. He is member of a number of non-governmental international organisations (Central European Forum, International Committee for Democracy in Cuba). He has also received numerous honorary awards, e.g. Knight of the Honorary Legion of France. |
